The Duffy Daugherty Memorial Award

16 11 2009

Welcome to the official website of the Duffy Daugherty Memorial Award.

We are proud to announce that the 2012 winners of the Duffy Daugherty Memorial Award are Vince Dooley of the University of Georgia and John Schwartz of Mendon High School.  This year’s scholarship winner is Matt Macksood of Lansing Catholic High School.

During his 25 year coaching career at Georgia, Coach Dooley compiled a 201–77–10 record.  His teams won six Southeastern Conference titles and the 1980 national championship.

Coach Schwartz and Mendon won their 11th MHSAA football championship this fall, downing Fowler 33-0 in the Division 8 Final, to tie for third-most football titles won by one program. Schwartz has coached in the program for all 11 championships, including 10 as head coach, and his record of 236-39 gives him a winning percentage of .858, tops in the MHSAA football record book.

Macksood finished his high school career with one of the most extraordinary seasons for a receiver in MHSAA history. His 94 catches this fall ranked second in the MHSAA record book for one season, with his 1,585 yards fifth and 21 touchdown catches tied for third. He also ran for 800 yards — averaging 10 per carry — and eight more scores. He did all of this as a main contributor on the Cougars team that advanced to the Division 5 Final at Ford Field before losing to Flint Powers Catholic.  Macksood will walk-on at Michigan State with an opportunity to earn a scholarship.

Coach Dooley and Coach Schwartz join a legendary list of past recipients, including Bobby Bowden, Joe Paterno, Eddie Robinson, Bo Schembechler, Keith Jackson, Bud Wilkinson, and Ara Parseghian.  Last year’s winner was former Michigan head coach Lloyd Carr.

Since 1992, the Duffy Daugherty Memorial Award has recognized outstanding contributions to amateur football.  Dooley, Schwartz, and Macksood will be honored at an award dinner on Thursday, April 26, 2012 at the Eagle Eye Country Club in Bath, Michigan.  Doors open at 5:30 for pre-event cocktails, and the program starts at 7:00.

The public is welcome, but tickets are limited.  Click on the “Ticket Information” tab to reserve your seat today.  We look forward to seeing you!
